hbg_KAM's Lyme Disease Journey

hbg_KAM's Lyme Disease Story

I had an unexplained illness in 1980, from which I eventually recovered and bicycled my way to health (knees especially). Twenty six years later I fell ill and never got better. Twenty months after that, I finally diagnosed myself with Lyme Disease. My Primary Care doctor, whom I had been seeing for 19 years, tested me for Lyme by the ELISA test. It came back negative and so he dismissed that diagnosis-an error that is repeated far too often. I had a neurologist ask if I had ever been bitten by a tick, and I said no- not knowing that the nymphs is so hard to see. Again, the diagnosis was missed due to insufficient knowledge by doctors who need to know. I finally saw a newspaper article about a young woman who has since become a best friend. It led me to get a test by Igenex and find an LLMD. It was positive and so I began antibiotics. By this time I was quite ill and cutting back more and more on my work schedule. I was a structural engineer and was having more and more difficulty performing my job. In fact, I had suffered cognitive impairment and my work was so bad that I took myself off almost all jobs and had trouble completing even the simplest projects. Ever since, I have been on a quest to find solutions both medical and political. I was lucky to have a doctor that had known me for so long and believed me when I said something is seriously wrong. He debated the "One month of antibiotics" nonsense and agreed with me that the science does not support it. I was spectacularly lucky that I was still able to debate this issue coherently. I continue to be lucky that I have been able to force my insurance company to pay for much of my care, so far. It is a continuing battle and I was shocked to discover what a sham the whole insurance scam is. 5 1/2 years later, I still have crushing fatigue, cognitive impairment, and various and sundry pain issues. I still have my home, my husband and a few old friends. I also have a host of new friends-mostly in the Lyme community, the beginnings of political skills, more compassion, more patience, and a keener appreciation for beauty and delight in simple pleasures.
